Belonging
to the 300-year-old Varanasi tradition of Khayal
gayaki, Pandits Rajan and Sajan Mishra learnt primarily
from their grandfather Bade Ram Dasji Mishra, father
and well-known vocalist Hanuman Prasad Mishra and
sarangi virtuoso Gopal Prasad Mishra. They were
teenagers at the time of their first concert and
have, since, performed to audiences all over India
and the world, including Sri Lanka, Germany, France,
Switzerland, Austria, the USA, UK, Netherlands,
USSR, Singapore, Qatar and Muscat. Immensely skillful,
imaginative, energetic and effortlessly elegant,
the two brothers have raised the status of jugalbandi
music to new heights. Today, the duo is considered
to be the foremost exponents of the Banaras gharana.
Excelling equally in rendering light classical forms
such as Tappa, Tarana and Bhajan, Rajan-Sajan Mishra
have commanded ardent audiences wherever they have
performed. They have released several music albums
in genres ranging from the classical Khayal gayaki
to the semi-classical forms. The duo will, this
evening, present Goswami Tulasidas’ Hanuman
Aarti, Chalisa, and Hanumanashtak.
